Man of Tai Chi (2013), directed by Keanu Reeves, tells the story of Hong Kong police officer Sun-Jing and his investigation into Donaka Mark’s illegal fighting operation. Donaka sets his sights on recruiting Tiger, a young working-class disciple of Tai Chi who is competing in a Wu Lin Wang Competition. Despite Donaka’s tempting offers of large sums of money, Tiger refuses to fight for him as it would compromise his honor. However, when inspectors declare Tiger’s Tai Chi temple unsafe and plan to demolish it, he decides to apply for historic protection status to save it. In order to repair the temple and preserve its purpose of cultivating peace and wellbeing, Tiger accepts Donaka’s offer for financial assistance.
Donaka’s fights, which are a form of modern gladiatorial combat favored by the wealthy, have had a significant impact on Tiger. While he has been able to earn enough money to support the temple and improve his own life, his fighting style has become increasingly brutal. This becomes evident when he causes severe injuries to his opponent during the Wu Lin Competition, leading to the rejection of his petition for historical protection by the authorities. Despite nearly killing his next opponent, Tiger ultimately has a change of heart and resolves to put an end to his involvement with Donaka. He reaches out to officer Sun-Jing in order to work together in tracking down Donaka’s next fight and bringing him to justice.
