Man on Fire (2004)

Man on Fire (2004) is an action thriller film directed by Tony Scott from a screenplay by Brian Helgeland, and adapted from A. J. Quinnell’s novel of the same name. In 2003, former CIA SAD/SOG officer John Creasy reunites with his old friend Paul Rayburn in Mexico. At Rayburn’s urging, Creasy takes a bodyguard position with Samuel Ramos, an automaker in Mexico City who needs protection for his daughter Lupita (Pita) to fulfill her kidnapping insurance policy. Struggling with personal demons and regrets from his time with the CIA, Creasy attempts suicide but miraculously survives due to a misfiring gun. Rayburn reminds him of their shared belief that ‘a bullet always tells the truth’, prompting Creasy to reconsider his fate. With renewed purpose, he becomes fully committed to protecting Pita and turns his life around by cutting back on alcohol and finding solace in reading his Bible. As he helps Pita become more confident through swimming lessons, a strong bond forms between them.
As Creasy waits outside Pita’s piano lesson, he notices a familiar car from earlier, while two federal policemen block the street. Realizing Pita is in danger of being abducted, he takes action and eliminates four of the attackers, including the officers. Unfortunately, Creasy sustains critical injuries and Pita is taken by her kidnappers. Although Creasy becomes a suspect in the eyes of authorities, reporter Mariana Garcia Guerrero has doubts about the official story. To ensure his safety from corrupt police, AFI agent Miguel Manzano moves Creasy to a veterinary clinic during his recovery. The leader of the kidnapping ring, known as ‘The Voice’, demands a hefty ransom of $10 million which Samuel agrees to pay with assistance from police lieutenant Victor Fuentes. However, things take a turn when the kidnappers are ambushed and the Voice’s nephew loses his life at the ransom drop.
