Mio in the Land of Faraway (1987) is a fantasy film directed by Vladimir Grammatikov that tells the story of Bosse, an orphan in modern Stockholm. Neglected by his guardians Aunt Edna and Uncle Sixten, as well as bullied by his peers, Bosse’s only solace is his friendship with Benke. One night, he runs away in search of his father and meets Mrs Lundin, a kind shopkeeper who gives him an apple and asks him to mail a postcard to the Land of Faraway. As he mails the postcard, the apple turns golden and reveals a trapped genie. In shock, Bosse accidentally drops the apple and frees the genie.

The spirit, who had travelled from the Land of Faraway to find Bosse, recognized the golden apple as his identification. With the boy still clinging to his beard, the genie transported Bosse to Green Meadow Island in the Land of Faraway. It was there that he discovered his true name, Mio, and his father’s identity as King Timothy Bottoms. On the island, Mio was greeted with love and generosity and enjoyed an idyllic life. He was gifted a horse named Miramis by his father and befriended local children such as Jiri, Nonno, and Jum-Jum. These new friends taught him to play pan flute music while living on Green Meadow Island.
