The Australian-British film Ned Kelly (2003) is based on the 1991 novel Our Sunshine by Robert Drewe. Directed by Gregor Jordan, the adapted screenplay was written by John Michael McDonagh. As a child, Ned saved a young boy from drowning and was awarded a ‘hero sash’. Growing up in Victoria, where he was born, the Catholic Irish settler lives with his widowed mother Ellen, younger brother Dan, and sisters Kate and Grace. At their house, Ned’s friend Joe and Dan’s friend Steve are frequent visitors. When Ned is 17 years old in 1871, he spots a white mare grazing alone in the outback. He rides it into town to impress Jane, but ends up being arrested for supposedly stealing the horse. However, it was actually taken by an acquaintance of his named Wild Wright.

After three years, he returns home and joins his family in running their small horse-breeding farm near Beechworth. Seeking revenge against Wild Wright, he triumphs over him in a prizefight and also becomes friends with Julia Cook, the beautiful wife of a wealthy landowner who resides nearby. One evening at a bar, Kate is being aggressively pursued by local constable Fitzpatrick. Ned steps in and things escalate when Fitzpatrick and his colleagues become hostile. In an attempt to retaliate against Ned, they steal the Kellys’ horses, but with the assistance of his brother and their friends, Ned manages to retrieve them. A few nights later, while Ned and Julia are consummating their growing feelings for each other in the Cooks’ stables, Fitzpatrick arrives at the Kelly farm demanding to see Kate.
