Octopussy (1983), the thirteenth film in the James Bond series produced by Eon Productions, marks the sixth time Roger Moore portrayed MI6 agent James Bond. The title of the film is derived from a short story in Ian Fleming’s collection Octopussy and The Living Daylights. While the overall plot is original, it does include an encounter with twin assassins Mischka and Grishka in East Berlin and the death of British agent 009, who was dressed as a circus clown and carrying a fake Fabergé egg. This incident leads MI6 to suspect Soviet involvement and sends Bond to London for an auction where he discovers the true seller. In a daring move, Bond swaps out the fake egg for the real one during the auction which leads to a bidding war with Afghan prince Kamal Khan who was using loaded dice. Ultimately, Bond emerges victorious after defeating Khan in a game of backgammon at his palace in India.
After escaping Khan’s bodyguard, Gobinda, in a chaotic taxi chase through a bustling marketplace, Bond and his MI6 contact, Vijay, eventually find themselves in the company of Khan’s alluring associate, Magda. Despite her seductive efforts, Bond remains focused on his mission as he allows Magda to take off with the real Fabergé egg fitted with Q’s tracking device. Betrayed by Magda’s actions and knocked unconscious by Gobinda, Bond wakes up to find himself captive in Khan’s lavish palace. Managing to escape once again, Bond takes advantage of the listening device to uncover Khan’s partnership with Orlov – a corrupt Soviet general determined to defy his superiors and expand Soviet domination into Western Europe. Through this arrangement, Orlov has been providing Khan with priceless Soviet treasures stolen from the Kremlin while smuggling counterfeit replacements into the country. Meanwhile, Khan has been using Octopussy’s circus troupe to secretly transport the authentic items into the West.
