While at a beach, Bond intervenes when he sees a woman attempting to drown herself. Later on, he meets her again at a casino. This woman, Contessa Teresa ‘Tracy’ di Vicenzo, expresses her gratitude by inviting Bond to her hotel room. However, upon his arrival, an unknown man attacks him. After overcoming the attacker, Bond returns to his own room where he finds Tracy waiting for him. She claims she was unaware of the assailant’s presence. The following morning, Bond is kidnapped by several men including the one he fought before. These men take him to meet Marc-Ange Draco, the head of the European crime syndicate Unione Corse. Draco discloses that Tracy is his daughter and shares details about her difficult past with Bond. He offers one million pounds if Bond agrees to marry Tracy and help track down Ernst Stavro Blofeld, leader of SPECTRE.
Despite declining the marriage proposal, Bond agrees to continue pursuing Tracy if Draco helps him locate Blofeld. After coming back to London, M takes away Bond’s assignment to eliminate Blofeld. Infuriated, Bond dictates a letter of resignation to Moneypenny, who transforms it into a request for some time off. He then heads off to Portugal for Draco’s birthday celebration. At the event, Bond and Tracy fall madly in love, and Draco guides him to a law firm in Bern, Switzerland. Breaking into the office of Swiss lawyer Gebruder Gumbold, Bond discovers that Blofeld is communicating with genealogist Sir Hilary Bray from the London College of Arms in an attempt to claim the title of Count Balthazar de Bleuchamp.
