ParaNorman (2012)
ParaNorman (2012) is a stop-motion animated film from directors Sam Fell and Chris Butler, who also wrote the screenplay. The story takes place in Blithe Hollow, Massachusetts and follows 11-year-old Norman Babcock. Despite his ability to communicate with the dead, including his late grandmother and other ghosts in town, Norman is ostracized by his family and peers at school. However, he finds a friend in Neil Downe, who shares his experiences of being bullied. During rehearsals for a school play about the town’s witch trials, Norman and Neil are visited by Mr. Prenderghast, Norman’s eccentric great-uncle. He warns Norman that he must continue a ritual to protect the town. Tragically, Mr. Prenderghast passes away shortly after their encounter from a heart attack.
During the official performance of the school play, Norman experiences a nightmarish vision of the town’s past. It involves being pursued through the woods by townsfolk on a witch hunt and ends with a heated argument with his estranged and paranoid father Perry, who later grounds him. His mother Sandra explains that his father’s strictness comes from a place of concern for Norman’s well-being. The following day, Prenderghast’s spirit appears to Norman and reveals that a ritual must be performed with a specific book before sundown. After making Norman ‘swear’ to complete the task, Prenderghast’s spirit is finally laid to rest. Although initially hesitant due to fear, Norman’s grandmother reassures him that it is okay to be scared as long as he remains true to himself. Norman then sets off on his mission to retrieve the book from Prenderghast’s house (which involves taking it from his corpse).
