Ready to Wear (1994)
Robert Altman wrote, directed and produced Ready to Wear (1994), an American satirical comedy-drama film. During Paris Fashion Week, a group of models, designers, industry insiders and journalists gather to work, argue and attempt to seduce each other. The fashion world is thrown into chaos when the head of the Fashion Council, Olivier de la Fontaine, dies from choking on a sandwich. He leaves behind a wife, mistress and a mysterious Russian companion who has since disappeared. As authorities investigate the death, Fashion Week continues. American television personality Kitty inserts herself among the designers to get sound bites for her show. Meanwhile, two American journalists named Anne and Joe are unexpectedly sharing an over-booked room.
The trio of magazine editors from Harper’s Bazaar, British Vogue, and Elle have a particular assignment at the show, but they opt to miss most of the festivities in order to sneak off for a secret rendezvous in their hotel room. These three women are all competing for the attention of Milo O’Brannigan, a trendy photographer who has been known to sexually humiliate them. This leads them to make a vow of revenge against him. Meanwhile, Sergei (a fading icon and the mysterious Russian seen with Olivier before his death) and Isabella (Olivier’s widow) are hoping to reignite an old flame from years ago. However, as they try to be intimate, Sergei ends up falling asleep. In one final twist, Fontaine’s former mistress Simone decides to send her models down the runway completely nude in protest against her son Jack selling her brand.
