Skyfall (2012) is the twenty-third installment in the iconic James Bond series produced by Eon Productions. Starring Daniel Craig as the titular MI6 agent and featuring Javier Bardem as his adversary Raoul Silva, the film sees Judi Dench reprising her role as M. Under the direction of Sam Mendes and written by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and John Logan, Bond sets out to investigate a string of targeted data breaches and coordinated assaults on MI6 masterminded by Silva. In Istanbul, while pursuing mercenary Patrice who possesses a hard drive containing sensitive information about undercover agents, both Bond and MI6 agent Eve Moneypenny find themselves in a dangerous fight atop a moving train. As M orders Moneypenny to take out Patrice despite having an unclear shot, she accidentally shoots Bond instead and he falls into a river, presumed dead while Patrice makes his escape with the coveted hard drive.

Three months later, following a public inquiry into M’s handling of the stolen hard drive, she is urged to retire by Gareth Mallory. Mallory, an ex-SAS officer and current chairman of Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee, puts pressure on her to step down from her position. Despite protesting that she is still capable, events unfold that prove otherwise. MI6’s servers are hacked and M receives a malicious computer message just before the entire building explodes. Amidst the chaos, Bond resurfaces after faking his death and learns of the attack. Despite facing physical, medical, and psychological challenges during his return to service in London, M gives him the green light to identify Patrice’s employer, retrieve the hard drive, and take out Patrice. In preparation for his mission, Bond meets with Q – MI6’s new quartermaster – who equips him with a radio beacon and a trusty Walther PPK pistol.
