Smokin' Aces (2006)
Smokin’ Aces (2006) is a thrilling American action film written and directed by Joe Carnahan. Infamous Las Vegas magician and aspiring criminal, Buddy ‘Aces’ Israel, finds himself holed up in a Lake Tahoe hotel while his agent negotiates for him to receive immunity from the FBI. With mob boss Primo Sparazza offering a million-dollar reward for Israel’s heart, various hitmen have been summoned to collect the bounty: master of disguise Lazlo Soot, contract killers Sharice Watters and Georgia Sykes (hired by Sparazza’s right-hand man), mercenary Pasquale Acosta, and three merciless neo-Nazis – Darwin, Jeeves, and Lester Tremor. In a race against time, Agents Richard Messner and Donald Carruthers are tasked with protecting Israel after FBI Deputy Director Stanley Locke orders them to take him into custody.
Meanwhile, bail bondsmen Jack Dupree, ‘Pistol’ Pete Deeks, and Hollis Elmore have also been hired to apprehend Israel by the law firm that posted his bail. The bondsmen are ambushed by the Tremors, leaving only Elmore as the sole survivor. While Messner investigates the crime scene, Carruthers heads to the hotel where all the assassins have secretly infiltrated. Amid a fierce shootout in an elevator, Carruthers and Acosta, disguised as a security guard, sustain severe injuries. Meanwhile, Soot manages to deceive his way into Israel’s penthouse by impersonating his right-hand man Hugo. Israel’s second-in-command, Sir Ivy, is outraged when he discovers that Israel has agreed to betray him and his crew as part of a plea bargain. He is quickly subdued by hotel security.
