Soul (2020)
Soul (2020), an American animated fantasy comedy-drama film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures, follows the story of Joe Gardner, a New York City pianist. While he dreams of pursuing jazz professionally, he currently teaches part-time at a middle school. When offered a full-time teaching position, Joe’s mother Libba encourages him to accept despite his reluctance. However, Joe’s plans take an unexpected turn when he auditions for famous jazz musician Dorothea Williams and impresses her with his piano skills. As he excitedly heads to the night’s show, Joe falls down an open manhole into the sewer drain and finds himself in the afterlife known as the ‘Great Beyond’. Determined to return to Earth before his time is up, Joe attempts to escape but instead ends up in the ‘Great Before’ – a realm where new souls are prepared for their life on Earth by otherworldly counselors named Jerry and experienced soul mentors. Each new soul is given a badge that must be fully filled with interests and personality traits before they can move on to Earth.
Mistaken for a mentor, Joe is assigned to 22, a stubborn soul who has been in the Great Before for thousands of years and hopes to avoid Earth. Intrigued by Joe’s desperation to return to a mundane life, 22 agrees to let him assist in finding her ‘spark’, which will complete her badge and allow Joe to use it for his own return home. Despite their efforts, they are unable to find 22’s passion. In a last-ditch effort, they venture into ‘the Zone’, where lost souls become trapped in their obsessions. There, they meet Moonwind, a sign twirler who rescues lost souls from the Zone. With their help, Joe locates his comatose body in a hospital. However, upon returning to Earth, Joe accidentally brings 22 with him. They awaken in each other’s bodies – 22 now inhabiting Joe’s body and vice versa. As they navigate this unexpected switch, 22 starts finding joy in simple things like food and music while settling into Joe’s body. In hopes of restoring themselves to their rightful places, they seek out Moonwind at the jazz club that night as planned earlier.
