In the American action thriller film, Speed (1994), directed by Jan de Bont, LAPD SWAT officers Jack Traven and Harry Temple stop an extortionist bomber from detonating a bomb in a crowded elevator for a $3 million ransom. During the confrontation, the bomber takes Harry hostage. To save his partner, Jack shoots Harry in the leg, causing the bomber to flee and set off the bomb. Though it appears that the bomber perishes in the explosion, he survives and watches Jack and Harry’s heroic actions on TV. As a result of their bravery, Lieutenant ‘Mac’ McMahon praises them and promotes Harry to Detective while awarding both partners with medals. However, as they soon discover, the bomber has another deadly plan in store. He contacts Jack to reveal that he has rigged a third bomb on a bus that will arm once it reaches a speed of 50 miles per hour (80 km/h) and detonate if it drops below that speed.

The bomber is demanding an updated ransom of $3.7 million and has threatened to remotely detonate the explosive if any passengers are removed. Jack races through traffic on the freeway, managing to board the bus, only to find that the bomb has already been armed. Amidst the chaos, a felon on board mistakenly shoots Sam Silver, the bus driver, believing Jack is there to arrest him. Annie Porter steps in to take over for Sam and attempts to slow down so he can receive medical attention. However, Jack is forced to reveal the presence of the bomb when it becomes necessary for everyone’s safety. After examining it beneath the bus, Jack calls Harry while the bus continues driving on an unopened section of freeway. Mac suggests offloading the passengers onto a flatbed trailer, but Jack warns him about the serious consequences of doing so due to the bomber’s threat.
