Based on the Marvel Comics character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, the American superhero film Spider-Man (2002) follows high school senior Peter Parker on a school trip to a genetics laboratory at Columbia University with his friends Harry Osborn and Mary Jane Watson. After being bitten by a genetically engineered spider, Peter falls ill upon returning home. Meanwhile, Norman Osborn, a scientist and owner of Oscorp, is trying to secure a military contract and tests a performance-enhancing chemical on himself, resulting in him becoming insane and killing his assistant. The next day, Peter discovers that he has acquired superhuman abilities such as strength, agility, speed, and the ability to cling to walls. Despite his uncle’s words of wisdom about responsibility, Peter considers buying a car to impress Mary Jane.
Although he wins an underground wrestling event to pay for the car, Peter is later cheated out of his earnings. Shortly after, Ben is killed by a thief that Peter let escape. In pursuit of the thief, he falls to his death from a window. Meanwhile, Norman disrupts a test at Quest Aerospace and causes multiple deaths while destroying their exoskeleton. After graduating, Peter uses his abilities to fight crime as Spider-Man, sporting a spandex costume and a masked identity. The publisher of the Daily Bugle newspaper, J. Jonah Jameson, hires him as a freelance photographer due to his clear images of Spider-Man. Hearing about Oscorp’s plan to sell to Quest, Norman takes matters into his own hands and eliminates the board members in order to maintain control of the company. As a result, Jameson dubs the unknown killer the ‘Green Goblin’.
