The movie was a joint effort between Columbia Pictures, Marvel Studios, and Laura Ziskin Productions, with distribution by Sony Pictures Releasing. It was directed by Sam Raimi, who also co-wrote the script with his brother Ivan and Alvin Sargent. The plot follows Peter Parker as he plans to propose to Mary Jane Watson after a year since their last adventure involving the defeat of Otto Octavius. However, their peaceful moment in Central Park is interrupted when a meteorite crash-lands near them, unleashing an otherworldly symbiote that attaches itself to Peter’s motorbike and follows him home. Meanwhile, Harry Osborn plots revenge against Spider-Man by using his late father’s technology and performance-enhancing gas. Their intense battle ends in a stalemate, causing Harry to suffer from partial amnesia.
At the same time, Flint Marko escapes from prison and visits his family before getting caught up in an accident involving experimental technology that transforms him into Sandman – a powerful foe who has control over sand. At a festival honoring Spider-Man’s heroic actions in saving Gwen Stacy, Peter is prompted to kiss her in front of the cheering crowd. This causes Mary Jane to become upset. Meanwhile, Marko takes advantage of the distraction and steals from an armored truck before fleeing after another confrontation with Spider-Man. Captain George Stacy, who is also Gwen’s father, reveals important information to Peter and his aunt May about Marko’s connection to the death of uncle Ben. The late Dennis Carradine was actually working with Marko as his accomplice. At Peter’s apartment, while he sleeps in his suit waiting for Marko to resurface, the symbiote takes over and merges with it.
