Street Kings (2008)
Directed by David Ayer, Street Kings (2008) is an American action thriller film. The protagonist, Tom Ludlow, is a detective for the LAPD’s Vice-Special unit who has struggled with alcoholism following his wife’s death. In his latest undercover mission, he arranges a meeting with Korean gangsters under the guise of a firearms deal as he believes they have abducted two teenage girls. During the encounter, Ludlow allows himself to be beaten and robbed before tracking them down using a device on his stolen vehicle. Upon arriving at their hideout, he takes swift action to eliminate the gang members, fabricates evidence to justify his actions, and ultimately rescues the captive girls from a closet. While his colleagues commend his success, Ludlow’s former partner Detective Terrence Washington voices concerns over police corruption and begins reporting them to Internal Affairs Captain James Biggs, prompting an investigation into Ludlow.
Suspecting Washington of betrayal, Ludlow tails him to a corner store with the intention of attacking him. Sadly, two gang members interrupt this plan and murder Washington in what appears to be a robbery. The recorded footage captures Ludlow engaging in a physical altercation with Washington and accidentally shooting him during the chaos. As a result, his behavior is both unwarranted and damning. In an attempt to assist Ludlow, Captain Jack Wander advises him to delete the surveillance evidence, while publicly stating he was the first responder but arrived after Washington’s death.
