Sudden Impact (1983), an American neo-noir action thriller film and the fourth installment of the Dirty Harry series, follows artist Jennifer Spencer and her sister Beth as they are brutally attacked by a gang in 1973. Sadly, the attack leaves Beth catatonic. Ten years pass before Spencer takes matters into her own hands and takes revenge on one of the criminals, George Wilburn, in San Francisco. She then returns to her hometown of San Paulo to seek out the remaining criminals. Meanwhile, Inspector Harry Callahan is once again frustrated when a judge dismisses his case due to his direct methods. At his go-to diner, he manages to thwart a robbery and take down three more criminals in the process. Later on, Callahan’s temper proves fatal for local crime boss Threlkis as he suffers a heart attack during a confrontation with Callahan over potential prosecution.
Despite higher-ups acknowledging that Callahan gets results with his unorthodox methods, they feel they have no choice but to order him to take a vacation. However, four hitmen hired by Threlkis have other ideas and attack Callahan during his vacation time off duty. Callahan successfully takes down three individuals, but the fourth manages to escape. Later, an individual involved in a dismissed case and his companions launch Molotov cocktails at Callahan’s vehicle. In an act of self-defense, he defends himself by taking the lives of his attackers. To keep Harry out of harm’s way until the situation calms down, Callahan is relocated to San Paulo. Upon arrival, he pursues a thief and despite the pursuit being successful, it causes frustration among the local authorities.
