Surf's Up (2007)
Surf’s Up (2007) is a humorous animated film created by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation, and then distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It follows the story of Cody Maverick, a teenage northern rockhopper penguin living in Shiverpool, Antarctica with his mother Edna and older brother Glen. Since first meeting the renowned surfer emperor penguin Zeke ‘Big Z’ Topanga, Cody has been determined to become a professional surfer. So when talent scout shorebird Michael Abromowitz visits Shiverpool to find participants for the Big Z Memorial surfing competition on Pen-Gu Island, Cody eagerly joins in. On the way to the contest, Cody makes friends with Chicken Joe, a friendly but not-so-bright rooster surfer from Sheboygan, Wisconsin. After arriving at Pen-Gu Island, Cody falls head over heels for Lani Aliikai, a female gentoo penguin who works as a lifeguard. He also meets Tank ‘The Shredder’ Evans, an arrogant king penguin who has won the competition nine times since it began after Big Z’s supposed death during a previous event ten years ago.
Cody witnesses Tank defacing Z’s memorial and immediately challenges him to a surfing competition. Despite nearly drowning and being stung by a sea urchin named Ivan, Cody is saved by Lani, who takes him to her uncle, ‘Geek’, for help with his injuries. Upon waking up, Cody discovers that the souvenir necklace given to him by Big Z is missing. Thankfully, Geek finds it in his hut and returns it to Cody. While looking for a place to sit, Cody comes across a koa log and Geek offers to assist him in making a surfboard from it. However, they lose control of the log on their way back to Geek’s house and end up on a distant beach. It is there that Cody finds an old shack filled with trophies and surfboards once belonging to Big Z. He realizes that ‘Geek’ is actually Z himself, which fills him with excitement. Cody asks Z to teach him how to surf, but Z agrees only after Cody makes his own board first.
