After discovering his father’s office has been ransacked, a young Peter Parker is taken in by his aunt and uncle along with some secretive documents left behind by his parents. Years go by and Peter is now a teenager attending Midtown Science High School where he excels in academics but struggles socially due to being constantly bullied. He harbors feelings for Gwen Stacy, who reciprocates his affections. Through an unexpected turn of events, Peter learns of his father’s connection to Dr. Curt Connors, a scientist at Oscorp specializing in genetic cross-breeding. In an attempt to uncover more about his family’s past, Peter sneaks into Oscorp and receives an accidental bite from a genetically altered spider that gives him incredible abilities including super strength, heightened senses, agility, speed, and the power to stick to walls.
Connors, who has lost his right arm, is conducting experiments on limb regeneration. Peter finds a crucial piece of information in his father’s papers – the ‘decay rate algorithm’ – and shares it with Connors, revealing that he is the son of Richard. Later, after a heated argument with Ben at home, Peter storms out. Frantically searching for him, Ben encounters a thief that Peter had previously let escape. In the ensuing altercation, Ben is tragically shot and dies in Peter’s arms. Using his newfound abilities, Peter tracks down criminals matching the killer’s description and begins to conceal his identity by fashioning a mask and spandex suit. He also devises mechanical web-shooters to aid him in his crime-fighting pursuit. While having dinner with Gwen’s family, Peter learns that her father is none other than police captain George Stacy who holds a negative view of the mysterious vigilante hero. Despite this disapproval, Peter trusts Gwen enough to confide in her about his true identity.
