The American dystopian thriller film, The Bad Batch (2016), is both directed and written by Ana Lily Amirpour. Following her exile to a desert outside Texas, a young woman named Arlen finds herself in a region known as the ‘bad batch’, where those rejected by society must fend for themselves. A sign clearly marks the area as outside of the US, exempt from American laws and citizenship. Despite this, Arlen is eventually taken captive by two women on a golf cart. Fortunately, she is rescued by a mute hermit who leads her to Comfort, a makeshift settlement known for its all-night raves. After five months pass and with a new prosthetic leg, Arlen has found both a sense of belonging and safety in Comfort. But one day, while exploring the desert with her pistol in hand, she comes across another golf cart resembling that of her previous captors.
Upon further investigation, she discovers two individuals scavenging in a garbage dump – a woman and little girl. Miami Man, leader of the cannibals and father of Honey, sets out to find his daughter. Along the way, he discovers a deceased woman and encounters a hermit. In exchange for a hand-drawn portrait, the hermit advises Miami Man to ‘find Comfort’. In this place, Arlen attends a rave hosted by The Dream – Comfort’s cult-like leader – where she takes a hallucinogen and unintentionally loses track of her child. While in a state of delirium, Arlen ventures into the desert and is eventually found by Miami Man. Threatened with death, he demands that she retrieve his daughter from Comfort. As they journey together, their bond grows stronger. Miami Man also confesses that he was banished to this lawless region due to being an illegal immigrant from Cuba. On their way to Comfort, Miami Man defends Arlen from another cannibal who offers gasoline in exchange for her flesh.
