The Book of Eli (2010)

The American post-apocalyptic neo-Western action film, The Book of Eli (2010), directed by the Hughes Brothers and written by Gary Whitta, follows Eli as he travels on foot through the wasteland of the former United States thirty years after a nuclear holocaust. Despite his rugged appearance and sunglasses, Eli possesses remarkable survival and fighting skills. When he stumbles upon a town ruled by warlord Carnegie, who is searching for a certain book to control the people, Eli makes a deal with a store owner to recharge his portable music player. While at the town bar, Eli fights off a group of bikers before being invited to join Carnegie’s employ, which he declines. Recognizing that Eli is literate like himself, Carnegie forces him to stay under guard for the night. During this time, Claudia, Carnegie’s blind mistress, brings Eli food and water while her daughter Solara attempts to seduce him at Carnegie’s orders. However, Eli remains resistant to their tactics.

Solara witnesses Eli sharing his food and reciting a prayer before they eat. The next day, Carnegie overheard Solara repeating the same prayer to her mother and realizes that Eli has the Bible he has been searching for. Despite Eli’s attempt to sneak away, Carnegie and his henchmen confront him on the street. When Eli refuses to hand over the book, Carnegie orders for his death. A fierce battle ensues, leaving many henchmen dead and Carnegie injured in the leg. Solara catches up to Eli and leads him to the town’s water supply in hopes of joining him on his journey. However, Eli leaves her trapped inside and continues on alone. Solara manages to escape but is then ambushed by two bandits. To her surprise, Eli reappears and kills them off. As they make their way towards the West Coast, Eli reveals his purpose: he possesses the last remaining copy of the Bible since all others were deliberately destroyed after the nuclear war.
