Bane, a former member of the League of Shadows, leads an attack on a CIA plane over Uzbekistan to abduct nuclear physicist Dr. Leonid Pavel and deceives observers by making it appear that Pavel died in the crash. Meanwhile, eight years have passed since district attorney Harvey Dent’s death in Gotham City. Thanks to the Dent Act, which grants more power to law enforcement, organized crime has been wiped out. Police commissioner James Gordon has concealed Dent’s murderous rampage and pinned Batman as the culprit for his crimes. Bruce Wayne, still grieving for his lost love Rachel Dawes, has turned into a recluse while his company Wayne Enterprises remains stagnant.
Bane recruits businessman John Daggett to purchase Bruce’s fingerprints, which are then stolen by cat burglar Selina Kyle from Wayne Manor on Daggett’s behalf. However, Daggett betrays Kyle and she tips off the police, who give chase to Bane and his associates in the sewers while Kyle escapes. After capturing Commissioner Gordon, Bane’s henchmen bring him to their leader. Luckily, Gordon manages to escape and is found by Officer John Blake, an orphan who has deduced Bruce’s true identity. Blake persuades Bruce to resume his duties as Batman. Meanwhile, Bane orchestrates a stock exchange attack using Bruce’s fingerprints to carry out fraudulent transactions that leave him financially ruined. Despite this setback, Batman reemerges to take down Bane’s henchmen.
