The Equalizer (2014) is an American action-thriller directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by Richard Wenk. Robert McCall, a former U.S. Marine and DIA / DCS officer, now leads a quiet life in Boston, working at a hardware store and helping his colleague Ralphie train to become a security guard. Often unable to sleep, Robert spends late nights reading at an all-night diner, where he has befriended teenager Teri. They often discuss the books Robert has been reading and his goal of reading 100 books, which was also his late wife’s goal. One night, Teri reveals her real name is Alina and she dreams of becoming a singer. As they take a stroll together, Alina’s pimp Slavi suddenly appears and violently assaults her before forcing her into a car. Before driving away, Slavi’s driver hands Robert a business card for their escort service.
Several nights later, Alina is rushed to the ICU at a nearby hospital with severe injuries. Hearing the news, Robert heads to the hospital and receives information from her friend Mandy, who is also a prostitute. Mandy reveals that Slavi is responsible for Alina’s condition. Robert tracks down Slavi and his men at their restaurant but is refused when he offers to buy Alina’s freedom. He takes matters into his own hands and eliminates Slavi and his men with ease before leaving. Little does he know, Slavi and his crew are just a small part of a larger organized crime syndicate run by Russian oligarch Vladimir Pushkin. Pushkin sends his enforcer Teddy Rensen to Boston to investigate the attack.
