The Expendables 3 (2014) is an American action film directed by Patrick Hughes and written by Creighton Rothenberger, Katrin Benedikt and Sylvester Stallone. Led by Barney Ross, the team of mercenaries includes Lee Christmas, Gunner Jensen, and Toll Road. They successfully extract their former member Doctor Death from a dictator’s fortress prison-camp while he is being transported on a train. Doctor Death, who specializes in medicine and knives, joins them to help intercept a delivery of bombs intended for a warlord in Somalia. Upon arriving at their destination, they reunite with Hale Caesar who guides them to the drop site. However, to their surprise, the supplier of the explosives turns out to be Conrad Stonebanks – a former co-founder of The Expendables who was presumed dead after going rogue.
In the ensuing confrontation, The Expendables eliminate all but Stonebanks who retaliates by shooting Caesar. In order to save themselves from a glide bomb dropped by Stonebanks’ helicopter, they are forced to retreat while Caesar is left severely injured. Once back in the United States, CIA agent Max Drummer tasks Barney with a mission to apprehend Stonebanks and bring him to face trial for his war crimes at the International Criminal Court. Overwhelmed with guilt for Caesar’s injuries, Barney disbands the Expendables and heads to Las Vegas. Searching for new members, he seeks the assistance of retired mercenary Bonaparte. Together, they assemble a team of young mercenaries including former U.S. Marine John Smilee, nightclub bouncer Luna, tech specialist Thorn, and weapons expert Mars. Though talented sharpshooter Galgo offers to join the group, Barney declines his offer.
