The Gauntlet (1977)
The Gauntlet (1977), an American action thriller directed by Clint Eastwood and starring both Eastwood and Sondra Locke, follows Ben Shockley, an alcoholic cop from Phoenix, as he is tasked with escorting witness Augustina ‘Gus’ Mally from Las Vegas. Shockley’s superior, Commissioner Edgar A. Blakelock, dismissively refers to Mally as a ‘nothing witness’ for a ‘nothing trial’. Despite Mally’s insistence that they are in danger of being killed in a planned hit, Shockley remains skeptical. However, it becomes clear that Mally was correct when their transport vehicle is bombed and her home is shot at. As they become fugitives, pursued without any official help and with the police considering them criminals, Mally reveals herself to be a defiant prostitute with ties to the mob and possessing damning information about a high-ranking individual in society.
After kidnapping a local constable and releasing him, Mally anticipates another attack and her prediction comes true when the constable is fatally shot by armed men. Later, while on the run, Shockley and Mally encounter a motorcycle gang and Shockley uses his revolver to intimidate them before commandeering one of their bikes and escaping with Mally. It is later revealed that Blakelock wants them dead because Mally knows about his hidden life. Assistant District Attorney John Feyderspiel also plays a role in the plan to eliminate Shockley and Mally, who are suspects in the constable’s murder. As they ride into a town, they are ambushed by a helicopter carrying police officers sent by Blakelock. The chase continues onto an open road as Blakelock fires at them from above with a rifle.
