The League of Gentlemen (1999 — 2017)
The League of Gentlemen (1999–2017), a British comedy horror sitcom, debuted on BBC Two in 1999. Set in the fictional town of Royston Vasey, inspired by Alston, Cumbria, the show follows a cast of eccentric characters portrayed by three of its four writers: Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton, and Reece Shearsmith. In recognition of the group’s 20th anniversary since appearing on BBC Radio 4, the BBC announced three new episodes in August 2017 which aired on BBC Two from 18-20 December that year. The intertwining plot features a transgender taxi driver, a hygiene-obsessed family with a fondness for toads, an outspoken reverend, a carnival owner who abducts women as brides, and a bigoted couple running a local shop exclusively for their own kind.
The filming primarily took place on location in the north Derbyshire town of Hadfield, and thus did not have a live audience present. To add laughter to the first and second series, a laugh track was incorporated by inviting a studio audience to view the completed episodes and certain interior scenes, such as those of the Denton family. However, for the Christmas Special and series 3 when aired in the United Kingdom, the laughter track was omitted. In 2001, the group embarked on their first tour featuring both old and new material. Additionally, they created a special one-off sketch for Comic Aid in early 2005 to raise funds for victims of the tsunami disaster. The sketch featured two popular characters, Tubbs and Papa Lazarou, kidnapping Miranda Richardson. Then on 3 June 2005, they released The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse as a feature-length film. Later that year, they toured throughout the UK with their new pantomime-themed show called The League of Gentlemen Are Behind You!, which ran from October until mid-December.
