The Office (2001 — 2003)
The Office (2001–2003) is a British mockumentary sitcom that premiered on BBC Two in 2001. Developed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, it centers around the daily lives of office employees at Wernham Hogg paper company in Slough. Gervais also stars as the main character, David Brent. The show consisted of two six-episode series and a two-part Christmas special. Despite low ratings upon its initial airing, it has become one of Britain’s most successful comedy exports. In addition to being broadcast internationally through BBC Worldwide, the series has been sold to over 80 countries on networks such as BBC Prime, BBC America, and BBC Canada. This includes ABC1 in Australia, The Comedy Network in Canada, TVNZ in New Zealand, and Star World in Hong Kong.
The show, a mockumentary set in the Wernham Hogg branch of a large paper company, takes place in Slough Trading Estate, Berkshire. This town was famously deemed unappealing by John Betjeman in his poem ‘Slough’ (‘Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough/It isn’t fit for humans now…’). The office is led by general manager David Brent and his team leader and Assistant to the Regional Manager Gareth Keenan. Brent’s continuous attempts to gain favor with employees and peers often result in embarrassing or disastrous outcomes, making him the source of much comedic success. His character flaws, such as verbal blunders, unconscious racism and sexism, and other social blunders are frequently played for laughs.
