Set six months after the events of the first film and its accompanying short Rings, Samara Morgan’s cursed videotape has made its way to teenagers in Astoria, Oregon. It is Jake Pierce’s seventh day after viewing the tape, and he enlists his friend Emily to watch it with him. While Emily supposedly watches the tape, Jake steps into his kitchen briefly before receiving a call from his friend. Thinking it’s just a prank, Jake is relieved until he notices dark liquid seeping out from under his door. He rushes back to the living room where he discovers that Emily had closed her eyes during the viewing. Unfortunately, it is too late as Jake becomes another victim of Samara’s wrath.
After relocating from Seattle, Rachel Keller and her son, Aidan, now call Astoria home. She is employed at The Daily Astorian, working alongside editor Max Rourke. While investigating Jake’s death and examining his body, Samara unexpectedly materializes, revealing that she had been searching for her. In an attempt to uncover the truth about Jake’s demise, Rachel breaks into his house and manages to retrieve the ominous videotape before destroying it completely. However, Aidan begins to suffer from chilling episodes and mysterious bruises on his arms after experiencing a nightmare in which Samara pulls him into a television screen. At a local county fair, Aidan strays into a restroom where he captures photos of himself but finds Samara’s presence in the images.
