The Rookie (1990)
The film, The Rookie (1990), directed by Clint Eastwood, follows the story of LAPD detective Nick Pulovski and his new partner David Ackerman as they take on a group of criminals stealing luxury vehicles. In the midst of their pursuit, Powell, Nick’s previous partner, is tragically killed. Despite being ordered to let it go by his superiors, Nick teams up with David to continue investigating. Over lunch at a country club, they spot the leader of the gang, Strom; Nick boldly confronts him and gives him Powell’s blood-stained badge. Later on, Nick meets up with his informant Felix at a bar while David gets into a fight and has his badge stolen. As a regular there, Nick manages to calm things down and retrieve David’s badge. To get information from Strom’s associate Morales, Nick resorts to destroying Morales’ car at a junkyard.
After placing a bug in Strom’s apartment with Morales’ help, he is caught and killed by Strom and his girlfriend Liesl for messing up an earlier theft attempt. Desperate for funds, Strom resorts to robbing a casino. As the manager opens the safe, David and Nick appear, having overheard Strom’s plan through Morales’ listening device. Nick makes an attempt to apprehend them, but David’s refusal to harm an unarmed Liesl results in their escape with Nick as a hostage and David being shot. Strom demands a ransom of $2,000,000 and takes Nick to his chop shop. Despite being struck by a bullet due to his protective gear, David survives. However, the police refuse to comply with the ransom request and consider Nick deceased.
