The Silent Partner (1978)
The Canadian thriller film, The Silent Partner (1978), directed by Daryl Duke, follows Miles Cullen, a teller at a small bank in Toronto’s Eaton Centre. Miles discovers that his bank is going to be robbed after finding a hold up note on one of the counters. He recognizes the potential robber as a mall Santa Claus with similar handwriting on his ‘give to charity’ sign. Instead of alerting his superiors or contacting the police, Miles secretly stashes the cash from his window’s transactions in an old lunch box rather than in the bank’s till. As expected, the Santa Claus robber holds up Miles at his desk and Miles hands over a portion of the cash before reporting that he gave all of it from his day’s transactions.
The Santa Claus thief, a misogynistic psychopath named Harry Reikle, becomes aware of the situation when he sees news reports detailing the hefty amount stolen during the robbery. In an effort to retrieve the stolen funds (totaling CA$48,300), Reikle resorts to acts of violence. He begins to stalk Miles as he travels to and from his home and also makes menacing phone calls. However, Miles’ calm demeanor in such a tense situation catches the attention of his colleague Julie Carver. Unbeknownst to Miles, Julie is having an affair with their married manager, Charles Packard. As Miles accompanies Julie to a Christmas party at the Packards’ residence, he shares his feelings for her with her.
