The American action thriller film The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009), directed by Tony Scott and written by Brian Helgeland, revolves around a hijacking scenario. A man known as Ryder, along with his accomplices Bashkin, Emri, and ex-train operator Phil Ramos, take over Pelham 123 – a New York City Subway train at 77th Street. In an attempt to gain control of the situation, Walter Garber – a Metropolitan Transportation Authority employee working as a train dispatcher in the Rail Control Center – receives a call from Ryder demanding $10 million in cash within an hour. Every minute past the deadline puts the lives of hostages at risk, warned Ryder. Acting on his threats, Bashkin ends up killing a suspicious officer from the New York City Transit Police while all passengers except the motorman are released at 51st Street after uncoupling the front car. As Garber reluctantly enters into negotiations with Ryder, Ramos and Emri set up Internet access in the tunnel.

As Ryder watches the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummet by nearly 1,000 points on his laptop in response to the hijacking, a connection is made to another laptop belonging to one of the hostages. Through the webcam, the control center can observe both Ryder and Ramos. Lieutenant Camonetti of the New York City Police Department Emergency Service Unit takes over negotiations, much to Ryder’s frustration. In an attempt to force Camonetti to bring Garber back, Ryder kills the train’s motorman. It is later revealed that Garber is being investigated for allegedly accepting a $35,000 bribe in exchange for awarding a contract for new Japanese subway cars. Upon discovering this information online, Ryder demands that Garber confess by threatening to harm a hostage. In order to protect the innocent captive, Garber claims that he accepted the bribe while trying to decide between two companies and used the money towards his child’s college tuition.
