Thunderball (1965) is the fourth installment in the James Bond series by Eon Productions. Starring Sean Connery as MI6 agent James Bond, the film is an adaptation of Ian Fleming’s 1961 novel of the same name. Emilio Largo, a SPECTRE operative, hatches a plan to hold NATO for ransom by stealing two atomic bombs during a training exercise involving a Royal Air Force Avro Vulcan jet bomber. To aid his scheme, Largo enlists the help of Count Lippe and Angelo Palazzi. In order to blend in with the French Air Force pilot François Derval who is involved in the exercise, Lippe has Palazzi undergo plastic surgery to alter his appearance. However, things take a deadly turn when Volpe and Palazzi murder Derval while staying at the Shrublands health resort. Unsatisfied with his pay, Palazzi demands more money and Volpe reluctantly agrees to continue with the operation.
The plan goes according to plan as Palazzi successfully takes control of the jet bomber and lands it in shallow waters off the coast of the Bahamas after killing its crew. As his men recover the bombs, Largo eliminates Palazzi for going back on their original deal with SPECTRE. Recuperating at Shrublands after taking down SPECTRE assassin Jacques Bouvar, who had faked his death at his chateau, British secret agent James Bond notices Lippe’s presence and monitors him closely. He discovers Derval’s body and is then summoned back to London, where he becomes a target of Lippe for meddling in their plans. But before he can defend himself, Volpe takes out Lippe for jeopardizing Largo’s scheme. Back in London, Bond receives news that all 00 agents have been put on high alert due to the theft of the bombs.
