Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), a spy film and the eighteenth in the James Bond series produced by Eon Productions, stars Pierce Brosnan as fictional MI6 agent James Bond. Directed by Roger Spottiswoode and written by Bruce Feirstein, the film follows Bond as he is sent into the field by MI6 to investigate a terrorist arms bazaar on the Russian border. Despite M’s insistence on allowing Bond to complete his reconnaissance mission, Royal Navy Admiral Roebuck takes matters into his own hands and orders the frigate HMS Chester to fire a Harpoon missile at the bazaar. In a sudden turn of events, Bond discovers two nuclear torpedoes on an L-39 Albatros trainer jet and is forced to pilot it away from the destruction caused by the missile. Meanwhile, media baron Elliot Carver obtains an encoder from the bazaar through his associate, cyberterrorist Henry Gupta. Carver’s plan is to use this encoder to create conflict between China and the UK.

Using faked GPS signals from the encoder, Gupta sends another frigate, HMS Devonshire, off course into Chinese-occupied waters in the South China Sea. Carver’s henchmen steal one of Devonshire’s missiles and use it to shoot down a Chinese MiG fighter jet investigating the scene. They then proceed to eliminate the remaining survivors with Chinese ammunition. In response, the British Minister of Defence tasks Roebuck with deploying the fleet to investigate the sinking of the frigate and demands retaliatory action. This leaves M with only 48 hours to investigate and prevent a potential war. To gather information on Carver and his company, CMGN, M sends Bond to Hamburg where Carver’s wife, Paris (a former flame of Bond’s), resides. After successfully infiltrating CMGN headquarters, Bond disrupts Carver’s plans by defeating Stamper’s men and sabotaging his satellite network during its inaugural broadcast.
