Toro (2016)
Toro (2016) is a gripping action thriller helmed by Kike Maíllo and featuring an all-star cast including Mario Casas, Luis Tosar, and José Sacristán. The screenplay was a collaboration between Fernando Navarro and Rafael Cobos. This Apaches Entertainment (Apache Films), Atresmedia Cine, Zircozine, Escándalo Films, Maestranza Films, and Ran Entertainment production received support from Atresmedia, Movistar+, TVG, and Canal Sur Televisión before pre-screening in Vigo. It went on to open the esteemed 19th Málaga Spanish Film Festival on April 22nd of that same year. Distributed by Universal Pictures International Spain, Toro hit theatres across Spain on its opening day.
Toro, a young con artist and former accomplice of powerful mob boss Romano in Torremolinos, Málaga, made the decision to leave his life of crime behind. However, his final scheme went awry, resulting in the death of one of his brothers and landing Toro in jail for five years. Upon his release, Romano discovers that López, Toro’s older brother, has been stealing from his lucrative tourism business. In retaliation, Romano orders the kidnapping of Diana, López’s daughter. Desperate for help, López turns to Toro who is now working as a driver for tourists and awaiting parole from prison. Toro only wants to marry his girlfriend Estrella and be free from his criminal past. Despite their differences, Toro agrees to help López and they confront Romano together. However, things take a turn when Toro fights back against Romano’s henchmen and flees with Diana in an attempt to outrun Romano’s vengeance. As the ruthless mob boss relentlessly pursues them, time is running out for Toro who must return to prison on parole soon.
