Turbo (2013)
Turbo (2013), an animated comedy from DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox, tells the story of Theo, an aspiring racer who happens to be a garden snail. In his suburban San Fernando Valley tomato patch in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, Theo, aka ‘Turbo’, longs to emulate his idol Guy Gagné, a five-time Indy 500 champion. But his single-minded focus on racing sets him apart from the slow and careful snail community and constantly embarrasses his older brother Chet. One fateful day, while chasing a tomato that has fallen out of the garden and narrowly escaping a lawnmower’s blades, Theo wanders onto a busy freeway and makes a wish upon what he thinks is a star (but is actually an airplane) to become fast. To his surprise, he is sucked into the supercharger of a Chevrolet Camaro, transforming him into part snail/part nitrous oxide-fueled speedster. But when he tries out his new abilities for the first time by taking a boy’s tricycle for a spin around the garden where other snails work, things go awry and he and Chet end up fired from their jobs.
Chet furiously scolds Theo for his recklessness before a crow swoops in and snatches him up. Thankfully, Theo comes to the rescue at a rundown strip mall, known as ‘Starlight Plaza’. However, their escape is short-lived as they are captured by Tito Lopez, the taco truck driver who works at the Plaza. He brings them to a snail race held by him and his fellow workers. To everyone’s surprise, Theo wins in record time, impressing both humans and snails alike and solidifying his new name – Turbo. Despite this, Chet is displeased with his brother’s newfound skills and wants him to return to normal. Meanwhile, Tito has big plans for reviving Starlight Plaza with Turbo as the star attraction. Unfortunately, Tito’s brother Angelo and coworker dismiss his idea.
