U-571 (2000)
U-571 (2000), a submarine film directed by Jonathan Mostow and co-written by Sam Montgomery and David Ayer, takes place during the Battle of the Atlantic in 1942. After successfully sinking an Allied convoy ship, German U-boat U-571 is heavily damaged by depth charges from a British destroyer. The boat’s captain, Kapitänleutnant Günther Wassner, sends out a distress call which is picked up by American intelligence. In response, the US Navy modifies their submarine S-33 to resemble a German supply vessel in order to steal the Enigma machine and sink the U-571. Before receiving their assignment, S-33’s executive officer Lieutenant Tyler is dissatisfied with his commanding officer Lieutenant Commander Dahlgren who has prevented him from being considered for command of his own submarine.
During a storm, S-33’s boarding party takes the crew of U-571 by surprise and overpowers them. After securing the enemy submarine, S-33 is then targeted by a German resupply vessel and torpedoed. In the chaos, Dahlgren is injured and falls into the water, where he bravely refuses rescue and instructs Tyler to immediately submerge on the captured U-boat. As Dahlgren passes away, Tyler assumes command of U-571 and dives below the surface to engage and sink the resupply vessel. Once repairs are made and power is restored, Tyler decides to steer the disabled submarine towards Land’s End in Cornwall.
