Unbreakable (2000), an American superhero thriller film was both written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Set in 1961 Philadelphia, baby Elijah Price is born with Type I osteogenesis imperfecta, leaving his bones extremely fragile and prone to fractures. In present day, former star quarterback and security guard David Dunn returns home from a job interview in New York on the Eastrail 177 train when it suddenly speeds up. He awakens in a hospital room without a scratch, and the doctors inform him that he is the only survivor of the derailment that killed all other 131 passengers. After attending a memorial service for those lost, David discovers a note on his car posing an intriguing question about his health and inviting him to ‘Limited Edition’, an art gallery run by Elijah Price.
He takes his son Joseph along to meet Elijah, who shares his theory on real-life superheroes. According to him, if Elijah represents extreme frailty, then there must be someone ‘unbreakable’ on the other end of the spectrum. This leaves David feeling uneasy, causing him to leave. However, he later discovers that he can bench press 350 pounds (160 kg), surpassing his own expectations. Although Joseph looks up to his father as a superhero, David insists that he is just an ordinary man. In response to Elijah’s theory, David recounts a childhood incident where he almost drowned and caught pneumonia. Elijah suggests that this follows the common convention of superheroes having a weakness and believes water may be David’s Achilles’ heel.
