Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) is an American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Venom. Produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, it serves as the second installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and a sequel to Venom (2018). In 1996, a young Cletus Kasady witnesses helplessly as his lover, Frances Barrison, is taken from St. Estes Home for Unwanted Children to the Ravencroft Institute. Frances, who possesses sonic scream powers, attacks a police officer during her transfer and is subsequently shot in the eye. The officer, Patrick Mulligan, suffers an ear injury from her scream and believes he has killed Frances upon shooting her. However, she is still brought to Ravencroft where her abilities are contained. In present day, Mulligan has become a detective and enlists journalist Eddie Brock to speak with serial killer Cletus at San Quentin State Prison. As Cletus will only open up to Eddie, the visit proves fruitful when Eddie’s alien symbiote Venom reveals the location of Cletus’ victims’ bodies leading to a major career boost for Eddie.
Eddie receives a call from his former fiancée Anne Weying, informing him of her engagement to Dr. Dan Lewis, much to Venom’s dismay. Cletus, who has been convicted and sentenced to death by lethal injection, invites Eddie to witness his execution. During their conversation, Cletus insults Eddie, leading Venom to attack him. In the scuffle, Cletus bites off a piece of the symbiote from Eddie’s hand. At home, Venom and Eddie argue about the symbiote’s desire for more freedom to consume criminals. Eventually, the symbiote decides to leave Eddie’s body and venture out on its own. As Cletus faces his execution, a red symbiote emerges and prevents the injection. This new symbiote is named Carnage and goes on a violent spree within the prison, freeing inmates and murdering guards. In exchange for Cletus’s help in eliminating Eddie and Venom, Carnage agrees to assist in breaking Frances out of Ravencroft Mental Institution.
