Watchmen (2009)
The American superhero film Watchmen (2009) is based on the series of the same name created by Dave Gibbons and published by DC Comics from 1986 to 1987. Set in 1985, it follows a man living in a Manhattan apartment as he watches news about escalating Cold War tensions and the response from President Richard Nixon when an unknown assailant attacks him and throws him to the street below. As the opening credits roll, a montage explores the history of costumed crime-fighters from 1939 to 1977, leading up to public backlash and the enactment of an anti-vigilante act. One vigilante detective, Rorschach, who operates outside of the law, discovers that the victim was actually Edward Blake, also known as ‘the Comedian’, a government-employed hero. Believing that other vigilantes could be targeted next, Rorschach warns his former team, the Watchmen. However, his former partner Dan Dreiberg dismisses his concerns as paranoia but still shares them with Adrian Veidt, a retired crime-fighter turned businessman.
After a visit from Rorschach, Doctor Manhattan, whose accidental superpowers have made him a valuable asset to national security, is preoccupied with energy research and disregards Rorschach’s questions. At the funeral for Blake, also known as the Comedian, Veidt, Dreiberg, and Manhattan each recall his cynical attitude towards their mission as the Watchmen. As mourners pay their respects, Rorschach singles out Edgar Jacobi, a former supervillain whom Blake had visited shortly before his death in a tearful and confused state. Despite being surprised by Jacobi’s claims, Rorschach hesitates to dismiss them entirely. Amidst media attention at an interview with Doctor Manhattan, an investigative journalist mentions that several people who have been in contact with Manhattan have developed cancer, including his ex-girlfriend.
