While We're Young (2014)
While We’re Young (2014) is an American comedy-drama film by Noah Baumbach. The film follows Josh and Cornelia Srebnick, a married couple and filmmakers living in New York City. Josh has been working on his documentary about leftist intellectual Ira Mandelstam for the past decade, without allowing his producer wife to assist. After giving a lecture at the college where he teaches, Josh meets Jamie and Darby Massey – a young couple who invite him and Cornelia to dinner. Jamie admires Josh’s work and that of his father-in-law, esteemed documentary filmmaker Leslie Breitbart. As they spend more time with Jamie and Darby, who lead an unconventional lifestyle, Josh becomes fascinated by their non-conformist beliefs.
As a budding filmmaker, Jamie discusses various projects with Josh, including Josh’s own documentary. This sparks an idea for Jamie to create a film centered around reconnecting with an old high school acquaintance he recently found on Facebook. In order to enhance the experience, Jamie and Darby invite Josh and Cornelia to join them at an ayahuasca ceremony. During this eventful trip, Cornelia’s hallucinations lead her to kiss Jamie while receiving Josh’s enthusiastic approval for his involvement in the production of the film. With Cornelia on board as the producer, Jamie and Josh set out to locate their old friend Kent Arlington, who is currently hospitalized after a suicide attempt. Shockingly, they uncover that Kent was involved in a civilian massacre during his time in Afghanistan, adding depth and weight to Jamie’s project.
