In the action-packed film White House Down (2013), directed by Roland Emmerich and written by James Vanderbilt, U.S. President James Sawyer stirs up controversy with his proposal to sign a peace agreement that would remove military forces from the Middle East. John Cale, a divorced Capitol Police officer, strives to impress his daughter Emily by interviewing for the Secret Service and getting them tickets for a White House tour. However, his college acquaintance and interviewer Deputy Special Agent-in-Charge Carol Finnerty deems him unfit for the job. As chaos erupts in Washington, D.C. with a bomb detonating at the United States Capitol, Finnerty takes Speaker of the House Eli Raphelson to an underground command center in the Pentagon while Vice President Alvin Hammond is whisked away on Air Force One.

Led by former Delta Force member Emil Stenz, a paramilitary team breaches the White House and eliminates the Secret Service, gaining control of the building. In the Blue Room, a group of tourists is held hostage by white supremacist Carl Killick, while Cale breaks away to locate Emily, who had become separated during the tour. Retiring Head of Presidential Detail Martin Walker escorts Sawyer to the PEOC underneath the White House Library. However, Walker betrays Sawyer and his security team, revealing himself as the mastermind behind the attack. His motive appears to be revenge against Sawyer for a previous mission in Iran that resulted in the death of his Marine son a year prior. After eliminating one of Walker’s mercenaries and obtaining his weapon and radio, Cale rescues Sawyer upon overhearing Walker’s plan.
