Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, Wonder Woman (2017) is a superhero film. As Diana Prince enters the Louvre in Paris, France, she receives a delivery from Wayne Enterprises containing an old photograph of herself and four men during World War I. The briefcase also includes a message from Bruce Wayne requesting to hear the story behind the picture. In her childhood years on the island of Themyscira, hidden away from the world, Diana grew up among the powerful Amazons – an all-female warrior clan. While observing General Antiope training her fellow warriors on the field, Diana yearns to join them but is forbidden by her mother, Queen Hippolyta. According to Hippolyta, Zeus created humans with good intentions but they were corrupted by Ares – the god of war – leading them to become filled with suspicion and jealousy.
There was constant conflict among the gods, as Ares refused to yield to anyone’s attempts to stop him. Despite Zeus’s valiant efforts, Ares proved too strong and continued to defeat the other gods one by one. However, in a last desperate move, Zeus managed to strike Ares with such force that he was forced to retreat. After this encounter, Zeus crafted a weapon capable of destroying Ares. With his last breath, Zeus also created a secluded sanctuary for the Amazons called Themyscira, hidden from the rest of the world by an enchanted barrier. Diana expresses a desire to see this powerful weapon and is later shown by her mother Hippolyta the sword known as the God Killer. She is told that it has the power to vanquish Ares, but Hippolyta hopes it will never have to be used. Despite her reservations, Hippolyta eventually agrees to let Antiope train Diana in preparation for facing Ares, as they all know he still poses a threat.
