Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), an American superhero film based on the DC character, follows Diana’s journey from childhood to present day. As a young girl, she competes in an athletic competition on Themyscira with adult Amazons. After taking a shortcut that leads to her disqualification, she learns important lessons from her aunt Antiope and mother Hippolyta about honesty and patience in pursuit of greatness. In 1984, Diana is working at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., while also secretly performing heroic acts as Wonder Woman. When new museum employee Barbara Minerva struggles to fit in, she finds a friend in Diana. The FBI enlists the help of the museum to identify stolen antiquities that Wonder Woman has recently recovered. While examining one artifact with Diana, Barbara notices a Latin inscription claiming to grant one wish (known as the Dreamstone).

Both Diana and Barbara initially dismiss the inscription, but when Diana secretly utilizes her powers to save Barbara from an attacker, Barbara begins to admire her strength, allure, and confidence. Unintentionally, Barbara gains the same superpowers as Diana. Meanwhile, Diana is still filled with longing for her beloved Steve Trevor who died a heroic death. However, when Maxwell “Max Lord” Lorenzano – a struggling businessman – steals the Dreamstone in hopes of bailing out his failing oil company, his wish is to embody the stone and gain its abilities. As he grants others’ wishes, he takes what he desires from them. This leads to chaos, devastation, and instability on a global scale. Upon further investigation, Diana learns that Dolos/Mendacius – also known as the Duke of Deception – is the creator of the Dreamstone. While it grants one’s wish, it also demands a great sacrifice unless they renounce their desire or destroy the stone itself.
