Directed and co-produced by Bryan Singer and written by Simon Kinberg, X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) is a superhero film based on the Marvel Comics team. The fifth installment in the X-Men series, it serves as both a sequel to 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand and 2011’s X-Men: First Class, as well as a follow-up to 2013’s The Wolverine. Set in a dystopian version of 2023, the film follows robot Sentinels who hunt and kill those with mutant potential or those who protect them. In Moscow, this results in an attack on surviving X-Men members Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Blink, Warpath, Bishop, Iceman, and Sunspot. In order to ensure their survival, the group sacrifices themselves while Kitty sends Bishop back in time to warn the others. With the attack successfully avoided, they regroup at a remote Chinese temple where they are joined by Storm, Wolverine, Charles Xavier, and Magneto.
During the explanation, it is revealed that Bolivar Trask first came up with the idea for the Sentinels. Unfortunately, Raven Darkhölme killed him in 1973. Consequently, the government took Raven into custody and conducted experiments on her DNA to create powerful Sentinels that could adapt to any mutant power. Xavier’s plan is to prevent Trask’s assassination in 1973 and hopefully change the future. However, this would require Charles to die during time-travel. Wolverine steps in and offers to go instead since his healing powers would allow him to survive. Upon arriving in 1973, he discovers that the X-Mansion has been closed due to the Vietnam War and Erik Lehnsherr is imprisoned for assassinating JFK. Xavier has turned to alcoholism and uses a serum to walk, but it weakens his telepathic abilities. Despite this, he agrees to help Wolverine and reunite with Raven.
