Batman: Gotham by Gaslight (2018)

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight (2018), an American adult animated superhero film produced and distributed by Warner Bros., features an alternate version of DC Comics’ Batman. It is the 31st installment in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series. In Victorian-era Gotham City, the caped crusader saves a wealthy couple from a robbery attempt by three orphans, ultimately stopping their abusive handler Big Bill Dust. Meanwhile, a former orphan turned exotic dancer named Ivy falls victim to the notorious serial killer Jack the Ripper, who targets impoverished women in Gotham. Misinformed citizens mistakenly believe that Batman and Jack are one and the same. As the Ripper’s body count continues to rise, stage actress Selina Kyle reprimands Commissioner James Gordon and Chief of Police Harvey ‘Bulldog’ Bullock for their failure to put an end to his reign of terror. At Bruce’s friend Harvey Dent’s side, they attend a performance at the Monarch Theatre where he meets Selina and they bond over shared experiences under Sister Leslie’s care as orphans. Through this encounter, Bruce learns that some of the victims were also once under Leslie’s protection.

In a race against time, Bruce rushes to protect Leslie from the Ripper’s grasp. But unfortunately, he arrives too late. The evidence at the crime scene points to someone from Gotham’s upper class – a bloody Dionysus Club pin is found. At Leslie’s funeral, Bruce encounters Hugo Strange, who claims to have knowledge of the killer and requests a meeting with Batman. Marlene, a drunken old woman, also approaches Bruce and accuses him of being present at Leslie’s murder. In the midst of all this chaos, the Ripper makes his move and viciously attacks Strange at Arkham Asylum. As Batman sets out to apprehend the perpetrator, he finds himself being chased by law enforcement. Thankfully, Selina intervenes and rescues him from danger. After taking refuge at her home for the night, Bruce wakes up to discover that Marlene has been killed. He is then arrested by the police, with Dent leading the charge as he harbors resentment towards Selina’s affection for Bruce. Following a trial, Bruce is sentenced to Blackgate Penitentiary where Selina visits him and urges him to reveal his true identity in order to prove his innocence and help save other potential victims from Jack’s clutches.
