Set in Mystic Falls, Virginia, the show premiered on The CW in 2009 and ended in 2017 after eight seasons and 171 episodes. It centers on Elena Gilbert, a teenage girl who loses her parents in a car accident and falls for Stefan Salvatore, a 161-year-old vampire who she believes to be human. Things get complicated when Damon Salvatore, Stefan’s mysterious older brother, returns with a plan involving their past love Katherine Pierce, who happens to look identical to Elena. While Damon initially holds a grudge against his brother for turning him into a vampire, they eventually reconcile and both develop feelings for Elena, creating a love triangle between them. Together they face various adversaries and protect their town, including Katherine herself.
As the series progresses, flashbacks reveal the pasts of the Salvatore brothers and the town’s history, along with its many secrets. Other intriguing plotlines involve the other residents of the town, including Elena’s brother Jeremy Gilbert and aunt Jenna Sommers. Elena’s closest friends Bonnie Bennett and Caroline Forbes are also integral to the story, as well as their mutual acquaintances Matt Donovan and Tyler Lockwood. Additionally, Matt’s older sister Vicki Donovan and their history teacher, vampire hunter Alaric Saltzman, play important roles. The Founders’ council, which consists of descendants from prominent families like the Fells, Forbes’, Lockwoods, Gilberts, and Salvatores, takes charge of town matters and works to protect it from dangerous creatures such as vampires, werewolves, witches, hybrids (werewolf/vampire), and ghosts.
