In hindsight, Ra’s al Ghul realizes his error in hiring the Joker as a diversion while he carried out his destructive plan on Europe’s financial districts. The Joker had captured Jason Todd, Batman’s partner, prompting Ra’s al Ghul to reassess his decision. During this time in Sarajevo, Bosnia, Jason endured brutal assaults and torture at the hands of the Joker in an abandoned warehouse before being left to die in a bomb explosion. Tragically for Jason, Batman arrived too late to save him. Five years later back in Gotham City, a new vigilante known as Red Hood makes himself known to the city’s top drug dealers. He proposes a takeover of their trade, offering protection from both Black Mask and Batman – with a warning that anyone caught dealing drugs to children will face severe consequences and possible death.
Batman foils an attempted robbery of Black Mask’s shipment, containing the advanced android Amazo. With the assistance of former Robin Dick Grayson, known as Nightwing, Batman vanquishes Amazo and discovers that the thieves were working for Red Hood. However, Red Hood swiftly eliminates them before escaping to Ace Chemicals. In a fiery explosion, the facility is destroyed. Attempting to gather information on Red Hood from the notorious Joker at Arkham Asylum, Batman and Nightwing face resistance as he denies any involvement. As a result of Amazo’s destruction, Black Mask orders a hit on Red Hood. In order to prevent him from hijacking another one of Black Mask’s weapons shipments, Batman and Nightwing track down Red Hood to a train station where he eludes them by setting off a bomb that injures Nightwing in the process. It becomes apparent to both Batman and Nightwing that Red Hood is highly trained and has extensive knowledge of Batman’s tactics, gear, and secret identity.
