DC Showcase: Adam Strange (2020)

DC Showcase: Adam Strange (2020) is an animated superhero film based on the character of the same name, produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment. It was included in the home media release of Justice League Dark: Apokolips War. The movie is part of the Tomorrowverse continuity, along with Superman: Man of Tomorrow and Green Lantern: Beware My Power. In flashbacks, we see how Strange’s origin story begins with a Thanagarian invasion on his home planet Rann. During the attack, his wife Alanna is killed and he sets out to find their daughter Aleea. Through a Zeta Beam, he is transported to Eden Corp Mining Colony Number 75. Determined to return to Rann and reunite with Aleea, he uses physics, math, and scientific calculations to predict when the beam will reappear. But as years pass without its arrival, Strange becomes disheartened and turns to alcohol. He even gets into fights with other colonists until a mining foreman takes pity on him because he too has a family waiting for him back home.

The colonists find themselves under attack by bug-like aliens from underground. The foreman, in a state of panic, turns to Strange for assistance. However, Strange is inebriated and unable to lend a hand, so they secure him in a shelter for his safety. Once he sobers up and witnesses the colony’s dire situation, memories of a similar attack on Rann come flooding back and he decides to step in. After successfully annihilating the alien threat, it becomes clear that there may be more lurking below the surface. With this realization, the remaining miners and their families begin preparations to evacuate. Grateful for Strange’s heroism in saving his loved ones, the foreman offers him a ride out of danger. Yet Strange opts to stay behind and await the inevitable arrival of the Zeta beam. As the spaceship departs, Adam’s rocket pack alerts him that the beam has finally arrived, signaling him to continue his quest in search of his daughter.
