Green Lantern: First Flight (2009) is an American animated film based on the DC Comics superhero mythology. It was written by Alan Burnett, produced by Bruce Timm and directed by Lauren Montgomery. This film is the fifth installment of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series released by Warner Premiere and Warner Bros. Animation. In ancient times, the first sentient beings known as the Guardians of the Universe used green energy to create the powerful Green Lantern battery. However, they were aware that their creation was vulnerable to yellow energy – the only color capable of resisting green. To protect themselves, they hid away the most concentrated source of yellow energy known as the yellow element. After one of their own, Abin Sur, died in battle, several Green Lanterns are sent to Earth to recruit Hal Jordan as his successor. Under Sinestro’s mentorship, they investigate Abin’s death and uncover a plot involving a stolen yellow element. As it turns out, Sinestro had secretly given its location to their enemy Kanjar Ro in order to have it turned into a weapon that could rival the power of the Green Lantern battery.

Jordan quickly realizes that Sinestro’s beliefs do not align with those of the Guardians. According to Sinestro, the Guardians have reduced the Corps to simply cleaning up after criminals instead of actively addressing the issue at hand. During a mission to apprehend Kanjar Ro, Jordan is knocked unconscious by Kanjar’s energy staff. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Sinestro seizes the chance to eliminate Kanjar and shifts the blame onto Jordan. As a result, Jordan is stripped of his ring as punishment. While awaiting transportation back home, Sinestro manipulates Kanjar’s lifeless body using his ring and discovers the location of Qward where the yellow element weapon is being created. Seeing through Sinestro’s facade, Jordan convinces fellow Lanterns Boodikka and Kilowog that something is amiss. Together, they catch Sinestro carrying out his nefarious plan. However, Boodikka reveals her true allegiance and disables Kilowog, allowing Sinestro to flee once more.
