The story follows an entity called The Centre, who explains its origins and has observed the rise and fall of both dinosaurs and humans. After witnessing humanity’s tendencies towards violence, The Centre decides they must be eliminated. During the Korean War, Hal Jordan and Kyle ‘Ace’ Morgan are attacked while in their plane but manage to survive. Meanwhile, in Gotham City, Saul Erdel accidentally summons J’onn J’onzz, the last survivor of the Green Martian race, to Earth before dying from shock upon seeing him. Stranded on Earth, J’onn assumes Erdel’s appearance and learns about life on this planet through television. In Las Vegas, Iris West talks to her fiancé Barry Allen (aka The Flash) on the phone at a casino when Captain Cold shows up to rob it. Flash races from Central City to stop him and manages to capture him before he becomes possessed by an unknown entity.
Two years have passed, and J’onn now goes by the name John Jones, a detective at the Gotham City Police Department. He is currently investigating a doomsday cult that worships a mysterious entity known as the ‘Centre’. The cult has recently kidnapped a child for a sacrificial ritual. Teaming up with his partner Slam Bradley, J’onn joins forces with Batman to stop the cult. However, during the encounter, J’onn is briefly incapacitated by a fire. The leader of the cult turns out to be possessed by the entity and warns of impending judgment. Meanwhile, Hal is undergoing training with Rick Flag at Ferris Aircraft for a government project involving building a spacecraft for travel to Mars. King Faraday, a special agent, oversees this project. Upon learning about J’onn’s investigation into the cult, Batman suggests they work together on it. As they make progress in their investigation, they face an attack from the US government which almost overpowers them. This leads to Flash announcing his retirement due to feeling disillusioned.
