What’s New, Scooby-Doo? (2002–2006) is a current iteration of the beloved American animated series produced by Warner Bros. Animation for Kids’ WB. As the ninth incarnation of the franchise that began with Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, it marks the return of Scooby and his friends Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy to television after a decade-long hiatus since A Pup Named Scooby-Doo ended in 1991. This revival came after both Hanna-Barbera studios closed down and William Hanna passed away in 2001. Staying true to its roots, What’s New, Scooby-Doo? follows the same format as its predecessor with the gang traveling to various locations and solving mysteries along the way. However, this time around they have access to modern technology that wasn’t available during the original run of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!

In this installment of Scooby-Doo, the beloved dog is voiced by a new actor, Don Messick having passed away in 1997. However, Welker reprises his role as Fred. After a five-year absence, Casey Kasem also returns to voice Shaggy. Unfortunately, this would be his final time portraying the character before his death in 2014. Despite this, he did have some voice work in later series such as Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue! and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated. Additionally, this series marks the long-awaited return of Velma and Fred as main characters in the regular Scooby-Doo franchise since their last appearance in 1984’s The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries. It’s worth noting that they did make an appearance in 1988’s A Pup Named Scooby-Doo (which also included Velma and Fred), but that was a prequel to the original series from 1969, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?.
